THWN is the wet-location half of the dual-rated building wire that fills Georgia job sites. We buy it in both legacy single-rated and modern dual-rated forms.
THWN is a 600 volt, 75 degree C wet-location conductor with PVC insulation and a nylon jacket. Most wire sold today is printed THHN/THWN-2, which covers dry, damp and wet locations at 90 degrees C dry. Older single-rated THWN still exists in plant stockrooms and on service trucks, and it is still purchased.
The distinction matters at quote time because dual-rated wire serves more applications and therefore sells faster. We read the print carefully. A reel marked THHN/THWN-2 is valued differently from one marked THWN only, even when the copper is identical.
| Construction | Copper conductor, PVC insulation, nylon jacket |
|---|---|
| Voltage rating | 600V |
| Temperature | 75 degrees C in wet locations; 90 degrees C dry when dual-rated THWN-2 |
| Size range | 14 AWG through 1000 kcmil |
| Standard | UL 83; suitable for wet and damp locations per NEC 310.10 |
Because THWN is chosen for wet locations, outdoor storage history matters. Reels that sat in Georgia rain for a season can have water between the jacket and insulation; we look at the wrap and the ends before quoting.
The number you get reflects three things: whether the construction is still in use, how much footage remains, and whether the jacket and print are intact. Everything else is secondary.
Wet-location wire is used heavily at water and wastewater plants, food processing facilities, car washes, and any exterior equipment pad. Those are exactly the Georgia facilities that also carry surplus spools in maintenance stockrooms.
We reply with a range for full reels, partial spools and mixed lots, anywhere in Georgia.
Dual-rated THHN/THWN-2 covers dry, damp and wet locations at 90 degrees C dry, which makes it usable almost anywhere. Single-rated THWN covers wet locations at 75 degrees C. Dual-rated stock is easier to resell and generally prices higher.
Yes, after inspection. Sun exposure degrades the nylon jacket and standing water can enter the wrap. We will still quote it, but expect the price to reflect condition.
Both. Standard practice is by the reel when footage is known and by estimated footage when it is not. On short cuts we often quote the lot as a bundle.
