Cross-linked polyethylene insulation makes XHHW the workhorse of industrial feeders, and it holds up better in storage than thermoplastic wire. We buy it in copper and aluminum.
XHHW uses cross-linked polyethylene insulation, which is tougher and more moisture resistant than PVC. It is rated 600 volts at 90 degrees C in dry and damp locations, with XHHW-2 extending that to wet locations. You will find it on service feeders, panel feeders and industrial branch circuits.
XLPE insulation resists the heat cycling that ruins thermoplastic wire in plant environments, so XHHW pulled from service is often still in usable condition. We inspect for ring cuts, pull damage and moisture at the cut ends before pricing.
| Construction | Copper or aluminum conductor, XLPE insulation |
|---|---|
| Voltage rating | 600V standard; 2kV available |
| Temperature | 90 degrees C dry and damp (XHHW-2 adds wet locations) |
| Size range | 14 AWG through 1000 kcmil |
| Standard | UL 44; NEC 310.16 |
XHHW's insulation survives long storage better than THHN's, which means an old reel can still be sold as wire. That is a meaningful difference on plant surplus that has been sitting for years.
The number you get reflects three things: whether the construction is still in use, how much footage remains, and whether the jacket and print are intact. Everything else is secondary.
Industrial plants, paper mills and food processing facilities across middle and south Georgia run XHHW feeders. Distributors in Atlanta, Macon and Savannah carry deep XHHW stock that eventually becomes surplus when a product line changes.
We reply with a range for full reels, partial spools and mixed lots, anywhere in Georgia.
XHHW-2 adds a wet-location rating at 90 degrees C. Both are XLPE insulated and both are 600 volt constructions in their standard form. XHHW-2 is the more versatile product and generally brings a better offer.
Yes. 2kV XHHW is common in industrial distribution and is purchased as long as the print is legible and the reel is intact.
Often yes, if it was pulled cleanly. Wire removed without ring cuts or abrasion can sometimes be reused; otherwise the copper value remains. Send photos of the ends and any damaged sections.
We buy statewide. A few of the markets where this category comes up most:

Send the details below and include photos of your spools, reels and labels. Photos are what let us identify the construction, estimate footage, and give you a real number instead of a guess.
